Summary of COM201C - Government of Canada Key Management Infrastructure (GC KMI)

This course is designed for Government of Canada (GC) personnel who will be appointed as Key Management Infrastructure Operating Account Managers (KOAM) as part of the Communications Security (COMSEC) custodial staff in departments that have deployed a Management Client (MGC) workstation with Key Management Infrastructure (KMI) software. The course is modular in design to allow participants to systematically learn the software in bite-sized segments. The course focuses on how KMI allows for an automated approach to key management, using the KMI as the accounting tool.

Participants will order, produce, store, and distribute electronic cryptographic keying material as well as account for locally stored and distributed physical COMSEC material.

Target audience

GC COMSEC custodial staff employed in departments that use KMI to manage COMSEC material.

Prerequisite(s)

Prior to attending this course, participants must have successfully completed course 230 – COMSEC Account Management  
It is also highly recommended that participants be familiar with the Simple Key Loader (SKL) device prior to attending this course.  Attending course 275 – SKL will meet this requirement.

Notes:

Participants must have a job requirement (i.e., be appointed as custodial staff to a KMI account) and hold a minimum level II security clearance to attend this course.

Course objectives

  • Train KOAMs in the characteristics and use of the MGC workstation
    • Keep the MGC secure and operational

  • Use the GC KMI software to fulfill daily tasks and responsibilities in line with COMSEC policies
    • Handle Accountable COMSEC Material (ACM)
    • Generate, transfer, and issue ACM
    • Manage the destruction and inventory of ACM
