Welcome to the Introduction to Research Security online course. This course was developed in collaboration with Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada.
Course description
Canada’s world-leading research is generated through open and collaborative processes that benefit all Canadians. As a result of its excellence, Canadian research and innovation can be targeted by those who will go to any means to access, steal, and benefit from this research. This course will focus on introducing learners to why research security matters and some core competencies that will help them further understand why researchers and their work benefit from an enhanced understanding of research security.
Objectives
The objectives of this course are to ensure that upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Explain why research security matters.
- Recognize risks, targeted areas, and understand common types of activities that could compromise research.
- Identify potential risks to your work.
- Develop mitigation tools and strategies to address risks in collaboration with institutional or expert support.
Course outline
- The course modules are presented in the following order:
- Module 1 – What is Research Security and Why Does it Matter to Me?
- Module 2 – How Could My Research Be Targeted?
- Module 3 – What Are Some of the Known Targets of Research Theft?
- Module 4 – What Can I Do to Protect My Research?

The target audience is for frontline researchers and academic administrators.
